Governor Bill Haslam has declared Saturday, August 11 Tennessee Hand Day statwide by proclamation. To commemorate this day of service, the physician members of the Campbell Clinic Hand Team will participate in community outreach by offering pro bono hand surgery to members of Memphis’ underserved patient population.

Through a partnership with the Memphis Surgery Center, Church Health Center, the Mid-South Hands Club, and other area practices, our staff will provide free hand surgeries for those who need them most.

The day will be called The Inaugural Bill Bourland Memorial Hand Surgery Outreach Day to honor the memory of Dr. William “Bill” Landess Bourland, a Memphis-area orthopaedic surgeon, who passed away in April of this year.

How This Event Came to Be

The American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) was established after WWII by a group of surgeons from the armed forces who wanted to build upon the knowledge they had gained while treating hand injuries for soldiers. Since 1946, ASSH has grown from 35 surgeons to more than 3,900 members spanning the globe, each dedicated to advancing the science and practice of caring for the hands and arms. The Touching Hands Project is a philanthropic effort of the ASSH founded in 2014. This initiative was founded for the purpose of making life-changing hand and upper extremity surgery available for free to those who need it most worldwide.
