When should I see an elbow specialist for my elbow pain?

Your elbow is not just a simple joint. It contains bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves. An injury or condition that affects any of these can cause you elbow pain. While many minor injuries improve with rest and ice, an elbow specialist should evaluate some more serious injuries.

Schedule an appointment if you experience:

  • Intense or persistent elbow pain
  • Significant swelling or bruising around your elbow
  • Difficulty bending or moving your arm
  • Pain that doesn’t improve after rest or icing the area
  • Pain cause by an injury, such as a fall or a direct hit to the elbow

Elbow pain can have many potential causes. An elbow specialist can help identify the cause of your pain and recommend the right treatment. Our team has expertise treating elbow fractures, UCL tears, elbow dislocations, elbow arthritis, elbow spurs, and other conditions. We’ll help guide you through every stage of your recovery.

What are my options for tennis elbow treatment?

Tennis elbow is a form of tendinitis caused by overuse and repetitive arm motion. What your doctor recommends for tennis elbow treatment depends on the severity of your symptoms. You will want to visit an elbow specialist to evaluate your condition and determine the best approach to care.

Tennis elbow treatment usually begins with nonsurgical treatments to reduce pain and give the irritated tendon time to heal.

Common tennis elbow treatment options may include:

  • Resting or changing how you approach activities that aggravate your elbow
  • Icing your elbow several times a day to help reduce pain and swelling
  • Taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to manage your pain
  • Stretching and strengthening your arm with physical therapy
  • Wearing a brace to absorb some of the stress on your joint if needed
  • Nonsurgical treatments, such as injections or shockwave therapy in some cases

If you still have pain despite exploring nonsurgical tennis elbow treatment options, your elbow specialist may recommend surgery.

When should I see a shoulder specialist for my shoulder pain?

Shoulder pain can make even the most mundane of everyday activities feel overwhelming. While some minor aches resolve with rest and ice, ongoing or severe pain may be a sign you need to see a shoulder specialist.

Schedule an appointment is you experience:

  • Severe, persistent, and/or worsening shoulder pain
  • Pain that makes it difficult to do the things you love
  • Limited movement or difficulty lifting your arm
  • Severe pain, swelling, or bruising around your shoulder after an injury
  • Numbness or weakness in your arm, hand, or fingers
  • Shoulder pain that doesn’t improve after rest or other nonsurgical treatment

When you see a shoulder surgeon, they can identify the source of your pain and discuss treatment options. At Cambell Clinic, our specialists have the experience and expertise needed to treat many common causes of shoulder pain. You can count on us to treat dislocated shoulders, fractures, shoulder arthritis, throwing injuries, bursitis, and more.

When should I see a shoulder surgeon for a rotator cuff injury?

Rotator cuff injuries can sometimes happen after you try to brace yourself from a fall or when doing heavy lifting. These injuries are common in people over the age of 40, but you also see it in athletes. For example, baseball pitchers often get rotator cuff tears because repeated arm motions cause wear and tear over time. Depending on how you injured your rotator cuff, you might experience:

  • Deep, dull ache in your shoulder
  • Weakness in your arms that makes it difficult to lift items or raise your arms above your head
  • Limited range of motion in your shoulder that makes it difficult to reach behind your back
  • Trouble sleeping because the pain worsens at night

Not every injury will need rotator cuff surgery. Rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory medication may relive your symptoms. But you may want to see a shoulder surgeon if:

  • Your pain continues to get worse.
  • You have significant weakness or loss of motion that doesn’t improve with rest.
  • Your pain prevents you from playing sports or doing your daily activities.
  • Your symptoms don’t improve with nonsurgical treatment.

A shoulder surgeon can check the severity of your injury and recommend the right treatment. For large rotator cuff tears that do not respond to conservative treatment, surgery may be an option. At Campbell Clinic, we have experts in rotator cuff surgery ready to help you get back to doing what you love.
