How long should you wait to see a foot doctor about ankle pain treatment?

With some foot and ankle injuries, you can simply monitor your symptoms at home and get a check up when it’s convenient. For more severe injuries, getting an early diagnosis and treatment plan can help avoid longer recovery and permanent instability.

How long you should wait to see a doctor for ankle pain depends on how the injury happened, the severity of your symptoms, and if they are improving.

Generally speaking, you should see a foot doctor immediately if you have:

  • Severe pain or you can’t bear weight on your ankle.
  • An obvious deformity where the bone looks out of place.
  • A distinct popping sound or feeling when you were injured
  • Significant swelling or bruising right after the injury that does not go away.
  • Numbness, tingling, weakness, or cold feeling in your toes.
  • An inability to walk or bear weight on the injured ankle.
  • Fever, redness spreading up your leg, or worsening warmth and swelling that might indicate signs of infection.

You can often wait to make an appointment within 24-72 hours if:

  • Your ankle pain does not improve after a few days of at home care.
  • Swelling or bruising stays the same or gets worse after a few days.
  • You can walk, but it’s painful and you may have a limp.

Don’t wait to treat a broken ankle

If you think you have symptoms associated with ankle fractures, see a certified physician as soon as possible. Campbell Clinic offers walk-in and afterhours examinations, and you can find the nearest available location here.

In the meantime, you should:

  • Stay off the ankle as much as possible
  • Elevate the ankle to decrease swelling
  • Have a friend or family member get cold packs and apply them to the ankle
  • Take Ibuprofen to limit pain and inflammation

When is bunion surgery necessary?

Bunion surgery is the next step when nonsurgical treatments no longer relieve your symptoms. If your bunion is causes ongoing pain or interferes with daily activities, it may be time to discuss surgery. Simply schedule a consult with a Campbell Clinic foot and ankle surgeon.

Before surgery, your foot doctor may recommend conservative treatments. This might include changing your footwear, using custom orthotics or padding, taking anti-inflammatory medication, or modifying your routine.

You may be a candidate for bunion surgery if you have:

  • Persistent pain despite wearing wider, properly fitting shoes
  • Difficulty walking or participating in normal daily activities
  • A bunion that has become increasingly severe or changes the alignment of your toes
  • Continued symptoms after nonsurgical treatments have failed to provide relief

Bunion surgery corrects the deformity causing your pain by realigning the bones, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. It not only removes the bony bump but also addresses the underlying structural problem that caused the bunion.

What are the best treatment options for plantar fasciitis?

The best plantar fasciitis treatment depends on the severity of your symptoms. Most patients improve with nonsurgical treatments. These might include:

  • Rest and ice
  • Stretching exercises
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Supportive shoes or orthotics
  • Physical therapy

A foot and ankle specialist can evaluate your condition and recommend a personalized treatment plan. If conservative treatments do not work after some time, your foot doctor may discuss more advanced options. These may include injections or surgery.

What Achilles tendon treatment options are available?

The best Achilles tendon treatment depends on whether you have Achilles tendinitis or a ruptured Achilles tendon. In many cases, Achilles tendinitis improves with nonsurgical care, although recovery can take several months.

Your foot and ankle specialist may recommend:

  • Rest and modifying activities that increase pain
  • Ice to reduce pain and inflammation
  • Stretching exercises for the calf muscles and Achilles tendon
  • Physical therapy
  • Supportive shoes or orthotics

If you suspect an Achilles tendon rupture or your symptoms continue despite conservative treatment, your physician may recommend surgery.
